Thirty Years Later

by Margaret Sharon Olscamp Dunlop NB Canada 1:16 pm Wed. June 5 2024

It really is interesting to look at old notebooks, even undated ones, as was my habit of keeping years ago. I do know that the notes must have been written somewhere from 1989-1991. Even if it was a few years later my notes are still over thirty years old. Yes, I keep just about everything. That is why, when important papers go missing I begin to wonder what is going on. So, on with my transcription:

Whether it’s a few women sitting around the kitchen table, a group of W.I women at a regular monthly meeting or active participation by women in local political parties, the message is loud and clear and very much the same – women unite.

The consensus reached this week-end in Bathurst NB at a local Women and Poverty conference, was that women must group together, meet, talk, lobby and help each other. Each of the groups represented there were sent home with the same message. Poverty does exist as was demonstrated by a few representatives of single parent groups and anti-poverty organizations and literacy advocates.

Thirty years ago? Have we really talking about poverty for that long? Incredible isn’t it? Will there be further parts to this piece? I don’t know. What’s the point? I guess I’ll see.
